Attorney Kristin Zemis Wins Celebrity Spelling Bee

(June 2011) - Attorney Kristin Zemis participated in the Celebrity Spelling Bee fundraising event that benefits The Tuscarawas County Literacy Coalition. It was held on May 24th at Founders Hall Auditorium at Kent State Tuscarawas.

Kristin emerged the overall winner as she took on words of increasing complexity and each of the other contestants was eliminated. She correctly spelled such words as “denouement,” “termagancy,” and “sciatica,” to be declared the winner. “It was a fun event for a great cause,” said Kristin.

She was assisted during the competition by her coaching team of Sienna Quillin and Gavin Dennison, both fourth-grade students at York Elementary. Other student coaches were Oakley Angel; Evan Preston, son of attorney Bob Preston; Michael Bihari; Abigail Connerton; Kelsey Sharp; Madison Vance; Abigail Kneuss; Kourtney Watson and Emily Pfeiffer.

Jim Gill, a member of the coalition and director of the Dover Public Library, moderated. He said afterward that the contestants made the event fun by laughing and joking throughout, and working with the children. Other celebrity spellers included Bruce James, president and chief executive officer at Union Hospital in Dover; Mike Lauber, chief executive officer of Tusco Display in Gnadenhutten; and Sally O’Donnell, senior vice president of First Federal Community Bank in Dover.
